Meet the McArthur & Symons team

evan

Evan Rees

Evan and his wife Anne bought McArthur & Symons in 2009. Evan had been working for the previous owners for eight years before that, having run his own highly success business, Rees Electrical, in Invercargill for a number of years. When he sold up the family moved to Dunedin where Evan managed another electrical and alarm company before moving to McArthur & Symons. Outside work, Evan is a Venturer leader (the teenage section of scouting), a qualified “Bush 1” instructor, and a keen tramper who loves adventure and being in the outdoors.

Kelvin Mitchell – Contracts Manager

When you contact McArthur & Symons about a job, chances are that Kelvin will be the person preparing the quote. Along with Evan, he quotes and estimates electrical work, often visting sites to ensure what’s required is fully understood. He liaises with customers and oversees their work to ensure the job is carried out to the highest standards. Also a qualified electrician, Kelvin began his electrical career at McArthur & Symons as an apprentice, then went overseas and explored the world for a number of years before returning to the company as an electrician. When Evan bought the business, Kelvin moved into the managerial role vacated by Evan. Kelvin is a keen vegetable gardener and enjoys spending time bush walking and getting out and about around Otago.

PJ Turnbull – Senior Servicing and Jobbing Electrician

It’s a rarity these days for staff members to stay in one place for long, but PJ arrived at McArthur & Symons in 1989, straight out of his apprenticeship, and has never left. He is the company’s most senior electrician, as he can fix almost anything. Initially, he was an installation electrician but moved to servicing and because of his excellent time management and customer relations skills. He is assisted in his work by his four-legged sidekick, Doug, a 3-year old bitzer who is adored by PJ’s clients, particularly those at local retirement homes. When not working, PJ plays touch rugby. He is an Otago and NZ rep, plays in six teams and coaches the St Columba Senior A team with his daughter, Dayna, who plays for New Zealand.

gordon

Gordon McKay – Electrician

When your lights suddenly go out, or your fusebox throws a hissy fit, Gordon is the servicing electrician who’ll soon be knocking on your door. He handles upgrades, call-outs, home wiring inspections for insurance purposes and is McArthur & Symons’ go-to man when something isn’t working as it should.
Gordon, from Aberdeen, has been an electrician all his life although he found time to go to college and art school at one point.
When not in his work overalls, Gordon plays tennis, is a home brewer, a reluctant gardener and a musician who both plays the guitar and ukulele, and sings.

lyn

Lyn Haywood – Office Administrator

Lyn is another long-serving McArthur & Symons staff member. She joined the company 14 years ago on her return from Rotorua, where she worked for Impact Glass. Born in Mosgiel, Lyn lives there still. Lyn’s role is all about making sure the company runs smoothly. She’s in charge of all the accounts, creditors, payroll, GST and bank reconciliations. She also prepares house inspection reports as well as keeping a wary eye on everything else. In her spare time, she breeds and shows budgies.

keiran

Keiran Harper – Workshop Manager

Dunedin-born Keiran is a locksmith and security expert having previously worked as a cash-in-transit officer in the security industry. When not being the friendly behind-the-counter face of McArthur & Symons, Keiran is active in Scouts where he is a Cub leader and a life member of Otago Rover crew. Keiran is proving to be a keen problem-solver who doesn’t mind the hard tasks.

With all this experience and skill available, McArthur & Symons is your go-to electrical company for any and all of your elelectrical needs.
